Odoo MCP by Edition and Plan: Standard, Custom and Community

The Standard plan has no external API, so no MCP path reaches it. Custom plan, Odoo.sh, on-premise and Community each have different options. A table, the official sources and a checklist.

Answer first

Whether an AI client can reach Odoo through MCP depends on two things: the edition you run and, for Odoo Enterprise, the pricing plan. On Odoo Online, the Standard plan does not include the external API, so neither Odoo's own MCP server nor any external MCP gateway, ERPipe included, can connect to it. On the Custom plan, both paths are possible. Odoo Community has no native MCP server in 20.0, but its external API is available, so an external gateway can connect.

What the official sources say

Pricing. Odoo's pricing page, read on October 15, 2026, lists "Odoo Studio / Agentic AI / Multi-Company / External API" under the Custom plan. The Standard plan is offered on Odoo Online only.

External API. The Odoo 20 external API reference says: access to data via the external API is only available on Custom pricing plans and is not available on One App Free or Standard plans. Every external MCP gateway, including ERPipe, uses that API. A Standard-plan database therefore cannot be connected by any external MCP product.

Native MCP versions. The native "AI MCP server" documentation page exists for Odoo 20.0 and for Odoo Online saas-19.4. The same page returns HTTP 404 for 19.0 (checked October 15, 2026). Odoo.sh and on-premise databases run major versions, so a 19.0 database there does not have the documented native server.

Community. We checked the official Community 20.0 source (branch 20.0, commit be94cbb5). It contains no AI or MCP addon. The native MCP server belongs to Odoo's AI app, which is part of Enterprise.

AI credits. The Odoo 20 release notes say all AI features now need credits bought through IAP. The MCP documentation does not say whether MCP tool calls consume credits. Ask Odoo before you plan volume.

What the native MCP server does

The documented native server authenticates with an API key that has MCP scope and exposes selected Server Actions as tools. By default the exposed tools read data. An administrator can expose further Server Actions, including ones that create or update records. Business buttons such as confirming an order or posting an invoice run only if someone exposes a Server Action that performs them. The key carries the full rights of the user who created it. See Odoo 20 MCP Server: How Native AI Connections Work for the setup walkthrough.

Where an external gateway fits

An external gateway connects through the same external API as any integration, so it needs the Custom plan on Odoo Online, or an Odoo.sh, on-premise or Community database. Within those limits it is useful when you need something the native path does not give you:

ERPipe does not change what your Odoo plan allows. If your database is on the Standard plan, the honest options are to move to the Custom plan or to use AI features inside Odoo.

Check before you start

  1. Find your plan. On Odoo Online, check the subscription in the Odoo customer portal. Standard or One App Free means no external API.
  2. Find the exact version. Settings shows it; on Odoo Online look for saas-19.4 or later if you want the native server.
  3. Create a least-privilege Odoo user for the AI client. Native MCP keys and ERPipe connections both act with that user's rights.
  4. Test a bounded read on a known record set and compare it with the Odoo screen before you allow any change.

FAQ

Evidence and limits

Reviewed October 15, 2026 against Odoo's pricing page, the Odoo 20 external API reference, the native MCP documentation for 19.0, saas-19.4 and 20.0, the Odoo 20 release notes and the Community 20.0 source at commit be94cbb5. Pricing, plans and documentation can change. We have not authenticated against a native MCP server for this guide, and we have not tested every hosting combination in the table.
